Every autumn, many young people embark on a new chapter in their lives as they start their apprenticeships – and car dealerships have the chance to get to know the skilled workers of tomorrow. Some turn up smartly dressed in a shirt, others in a hoodie, trainers and with a can of energy drink in their hand. Some seem shy, others talk non-stop. First impressions reveal surprisingly little about who will, in a few months’ time, become the team’s most valuable asset.
During a job interview, there are many impressions to take in. Some prospective trainees come across as unsure, whilst others seem overly keen. Some are barely familiar with tools, whilst others have already tinkered with vehicles in their spare time.
It’s not uncommon for hasty judgements to be made – based on demeanour, language skills or clothing. Yet none of this says much about how committed, willing to learn or able to work in a team a person actually is.
Successful car dealerships create environments in which young people can thrive. Clear induction plans, designated leaders, regular feedback and a supportive corporate culture ensure that any uncertainty is quickly dispelled and motivation is maintained.
This is exactly where we come in. We support car dealerships in developing their processes and coach managers to consciously fulfil their role as trainers and role models. As our coach André Glanz says:
Corporate culture does not arise by chance – it is shaped every day by the behaviour of managers. Those who place their trust in others, set clear expectations and provide constructive feedback lay the foundations for young talent to realise their potential.
First impressions last just a few seconds. Good training has an impact for many years. It is therefore worthwhile for car dealerships to adopt a more open-minded approach when searching for new talent.
Those who consistently support their young staff gain far more than just extra manpower. They develop skilled workers who get to know their company’s processes, values and standards from the ground up and remain with the company in the long term.
