In modern workshops, effectiveness is no longer the only measure of success; employee satisfaction is also taken into account. The pressure to find ergonomic solutions is growing, and not just because of the shortage of skilled workers and an ageing workforce. Exoskeletons can provide great support for employees performing physically demanding tasks. That is why we are focusing on how to integrate such systems into everyday workshop life.
Not all mechanics look like Hercules. Nor do they need to. However, lifting heavy objects, working overhead for long periods, frequently repeating the same movements and adopting awkward postures are all part of everyday life in aftersales. It is not only older colleagues who eventually reach their physical limits. It is therefore becoming increasingly important for companies to minimise health risks. This allows people who are less physically fit to work in the workshop, and significantly reduces absences due to illness, and early retirement.
We support car dealerships and workshops in selecting and introducing ergonomic assistance systems, known as exoskeletons. Anyone who thinks of "Terminator" is fortunately mistaken: exoskeletons are worn on the body and provide relief without restricting freedom of movement. However, most solutions look more functional than frightening, explains Dennis Hartmann, cotedo COO and head of the consulting team:
A distinction is made between passive systems, such as those for resting your elbows when working overhead, and active variants that use sensors and small motors to detect movements and provide targeted support, for example in wheel/tyre service. We explore individually which solution is right for each company – and help with procurement, implementation and training.
The introduction of exoskeletons pays off in several ways: physical strain is reduced, while at the same time the long-term employability of staff increases, even as they get older. Acceptance is not really an issue, by the way: many employees see the systems as a positive sign of appreciation from their employer. This turns care into a real competitive factor in the battle for skilled workers. And Hercules? He can treat himself to a break now and then.
