With the launch of the "Neue Klasse", a new generation of BMW high-voltage batteries is coming to car dealerships. The GEN6 batteries feature a closed, load-bearing housing – and they are very heavy. Any battery defect means a complete replacement. Workshops have to consider new requirements, new processes and in many cases, structural adjustments. cotedo is supporting several car dealerships in Europe with their preparations.
The media response was huge: with the introduction of the GEN6 battery, BMW is setting new standards in vehicle construction. At the same time, however, service requirements are also significantly increased. This is because the battery is designed as a load-bearing component, it weighs 860 kg and can only be replaced completely, not repaired modularly. Its closed design and the upcoming market launch in large quantities pose several challenges:
Workshops must be logistically and structurally prepared, including heavy-duty forklifts, gantry cranes and suitable lifting technology. The quarantine of damaged HV batteries requires separate areas or boxes with special safety requirements. The infrastructure – from flooring and forklift routes to delivery and return logistics with large lorries – needs re-thinking in many businesses. Resilient new processes are not only necessary for the workshops’ own repair cycles – neighbouring businesses may send in more GEN6 replacement requirements, sometimes at short notice.
All of this requires early planning to ensure that the changeover will not slow down the service process. Implementing the necessary measures, if possible at all, can easily take several months.
That is why we are already supporting BMW service centres with their strategic and structural preparations for GEN6, says Christian Heemann, Senior Automotive Consultant at cotedo:
We are conducting a readiness check in several European countries, to determine whether the spatial and technical infrastructure on site is suitable for GEN6, what structural adjustments are necessary, and how logistics, handling and repairs can be implemented safely, efficiently and economically.
Of course, our consultation is coordinated with BMW, it is future-oriented and always tailored to the specific situation of each workshop.
The introduction of the GEN6 battery is an important step in the transition to a new service logic. Our analyses and recommendations enable companies to react in a timely manner and implement targeted structural measures. This is how the new technology is safely integrated into existing processes and structures.
